You need a USDOT number if you are operating a vehicle weighing more than 10,000 pounds to participate in interstate commerce. Other vehicles that require a USDOT number include passenger vehicles between 9 and 15 passengers (including the driver) that are used for compensation, any vehicle transporting 16 or more passengers (including the driver) across state lines, and any vehicle transporting hazardous materials.
