A TXDOT number is a DOT number specific to the state of Texas. Obtaining a TXDOT first requires a USDOT, but you will only need one if you are an intrastate carrier in Texas and operate a vehicle with a gross weight exceeding 26,000 pounds, transporting hazardous materials, or transporting 15 or more passengers (including the driver). Farm vehicles with a gross vehicle weight equal to or greater than 48,000 pounds and transporters of household goods (regardless of weight) for compensation are required to apply for a TXDOT as well.
